Make Time for your Partner

Though a magical time for both parents-to-be, the months of pregnancy can often leave couples feeling rushed, exhausted, and overextended. What better time than Mother’s Day to schedule a quiet getaway weekend to reconnect with your partner? Before the excitement of a new baby turns your lives as a couple into something completely new and exciting, a few days together can help cement your commitment to each other and to your growing family.

The trip need not be far to create a lifetime of pleasant memories. Many doctors recommend their pregnant patients travel no farther than 90 minutes from home after a certain point in pregnancy.

Elizabeth Swift was used to whirlwind vacations full of sightseeing and fast travel. She and her husband decided that a less adventurous four-day trip was just what they needed this year. “We scoured the Internet looking for a romantic spot where we could just relax and enjoy each other,” she explains.

They picked a small town in Kentucky, not far from her Ohio home, where they stayed in a bed-and-breakfast and spent plenty of time doing not much at all.

“We visited about one place a day and spent the rest of our time milling around the town, eating, driving, eating, soaking in our tub for two, eating, and reflecting on our marriage and how it will be enhanced when our new addition comes along,” Elizabeth says. Since she took the trip when she was 32 weeks pregnant, she made sure to pack plenty of crackers and snack bars so she never felt run-down. “Eating was certainly a priority,” she says.

Still, Elizabeth and her husband discovered that during their “last fling” before parenthood, every place they stopped made them more eager to welcome their new baby. “We can’t wait to be able to share the things we enjoy with our child,” she says.
